Dahlonega, Georgia

Dahlonega, Georgia

The City of Dahlonega (pronounced “Dah-lahn-e-ga”) is located in Lumpkin County and was a gold mining region in the the 1820’s. Dahlonega, Georgia has a rich history of being one of the first “gold rushes” in the United States. The gold had been discovered on Cherokee land in North Georgia and, as a result, the Native Americans who lived in the Dahlonega area were forced to leave their home and live on reservations elsewhere.

The name Dahlonega is Cherokee for “golden color” or “yellow money”. The city still has several venues where visitors can pan for gold, just like the old-timers! The Dahlonega Gold Museum, Georgia’s oldest public building, is housed in the old Lumpkin County Courthouse which is located in the center of the town square. This building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
